Sofishare was founded in 2009 by Eric Spaeth in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The idea of person-to-person carsharing occurred to him after his beloved 1986 Saab stopped running and he lived for the following years renting and borrowing cars. He started riding his bicycle a lot more, walking more, shopping locally, saved a small fortune on car expenses and realized that he did not need a car as often as he had thought. Why own a car when he didn't need one? Why not share one? After first working to develop a conventional carshare, he took note of the fact that there were cars sitting unused wherever he went - a worldwide fleet, ready and waiting to be organized.
